My Belief's, Sonny's Blues

I've spent some time reminiscing with some old journal entries/reflections.  It's amazing how much encouragement one can get from old journals.  Here is a composition from an English class I took in 2009.

The greatest battle a man will ever fight is the one between himself
and the person he sees as he looks in the mirror.  Who am I? For what
purpose am I here?  How did I get here?  Considering the things I have
done, would God, who is without flaw, love me?  Furthermore, would He
use me?  To continue, I shall reference a prose, entitled “This is
Life.”

                                                            This is life,
                                                         Living with God,
                                            Fellowship with the Most High,
                                                       To represent Jesus,
To be the fullness of what God endowed us with,
To be you the best way you know how,
                                             Being you entails knowing Him,
                                                   Knowing Him is life.

As a Christian, I have struggled with identity, with specific regard
to finding my niche in life.  Pursuing my discipline seemed to
contradict my pre-conceived notion of doing the will of God.  However,
in the same manner that Sonny in James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues” finds
his niche in music, I find mine in pursuing science God’s way.  Being
a Christian demands that I be myself.

In early twentieth century Harlem, New York City, the narrator
receives tragic news that his brother, Sonny, was arrested for heroin
use and distribution.  In great shock, he hesitates to even make
contact with Sonny.  When Sonny does finally receive some type of
correspondence, he is enthralled.  He moves in with his
sister-in-law’s family—Isabel’s family.  The narrator reflects upon
some precious moments with His Daddy and Mama.  Mama made him promise
to never forget Sonny, nothing horrible would happen to him.  Later
on, Sonny declares his desire to become a jazz musician.  It is the
only profession he wants to pursue.  While at Isabel’s, Sonny
persistently plays music, to the point of annoying the ones he lives
with.  His love for music gets in the way of his education.  When he
is finally confronted, he is deeply hurt.  Soon, Sonny and his brother
find themselves in a heated quarrel. After some time apart, the two
reunite and make some peace.  Sonny takes the narrator to a nightclub
in which he will perform.  Upon the story’s denouement, the narrator
asserts his approval as he sees Sonny’s prowess of music (James
Baldwin).

Coming from a place where a keen emphasis is placed on ecclesiastical
work, I found myself in a conflict of calling.  Should I solely pursue
ecclesiastical work and forsake all other aspirations?  I constantly
faced such questions.  James Baldwin develops the character of Sonny
as one who emphatically follows his heart concerning his gifting in
music; he’s rather headstrong about his mission.

Sonny asserts a profound reality of existence.  “’I think people
ought to do what they want to do, what else are they alive for?’”
(Baldwin).  That statement struck me to the core, and God ministered
to my heart.  He is not limited to one medium to propagate His truth
to His world.  He can and will use my unique aspirations, which were
authored by Him, to be effective in the word, “into every man’s
world.”  Unknown aspects of my being awaken as He speaks to me and
uses me in ways I thought He would not.  It is in the place of
offering my unique essence unto God that I come alive.

Just like a musician masterfully makes music with His instrument, God
works through us.  To paraphrase the chorus of David Phelps’ song
“Virtuoso,” my heart is God’s instrument and the life I live is the
song He composes.  Also a virtuoso of words, James Baldwin
stylistically illustrates the relationship.  The text reads,

And, while Creole listened, Sonny moved, deep within exactly like

someone in torment.  I had never before thought of how awful the
relationship must be between the musician and his instrument.  He has
to fill it, this instrument with the breath of life, His own.  He has
to make it do what he wants it to do (Baldwin).

James Baldwin effectively communicates the truth of staying true to
oneself in “Sonny’s Blues.”  God has shown me that truly seeking Him
necessitates that I be true to who I am, the essence of the man that
He has made me to be.  If I seek to conform to the container cast by
my surroundings, the purpose of existence is defeated and I will fail
to live life to the fullest.  If life is but a breath, I do not want
to waste it.  In seeking to be both a Christian and myself, I have
found that the only way to do so is to let God be the musician, even
if others may argue that the song composed is not in harmony with
their conception of God’s will.

Oh Great River Jordan

Oh Great River Jordan
by Jared Jacob

Oh Great River Jordan,
Can I see beyond this horizon?
Can I venture into the furthest limits of my mind?
Can I see into the moment when my capacity to accommodate complacent comfort is disturbed?... …so that defiance for adventure would awaken.

I look at myself,
I see the smile of Jesus.
There it is…the River Jordan.
Beyond my capacity? No, I can’t see it.
Nonetheless, I believe.

The One who started the good work is faithful to complete it.
Faithful is He-the Sun who rises in my eastern horizon;
The Sun who brings life to my pastures,
Makes verdant the desert lands,
Forging streams in the wilderness.
He is the source of life.

Oh Great River Jordan,
I saw you face-to-face.
I reckoned with a truth:
Progress requires a step in the right direction.
In retrospect, the One who created you allowed me to make it across.

A challenge seen;
A challenge overcome.
The call of God: His provision to accomplish.

Exceedingly Abundantly

Dream a dream and allow God to bring it into fruition.

Dream a dream that requires a miracle.

Dream a dream that you can't even dream.

If you could accomplish it on your own, you're not dreaming big enough.

“What parameters do I have to work with?,” you may ask. Forget the concept of parameter (or boundary). With God, there is no boundary to what He can do to and through your life.

For a moment, forsake the convention of measurement. Rather, adopt a notion of the limitless.

Calculus 101: That is to say, “the limit of God as time approaches infinity DOES NOT EXIST.” God has never been limited. God is not limited. God will never be limited. Q.E.D.

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us…” (Eph 3:20 NKJV).
That's right! Preach it, Brother Paul!

He said, “exceedingly abundantly.” Not just „abundantly, but “exceedingly abundantly.” That's an extreme adverb modifying another extreme adverb. In some urban circles, you could call that “baller.”

I don't think I could grasp those two words: “exceedingly abundantly.” I know. I tried it. It just didn't work.
Remember, God gives you a hope beyond the scope of human vision, far exceeding the function of the human dream…

To the dreamers out there, be encouraged! For those of you who dare to believe for the impossible…To those who are bold enough to stand before the giants…To those who call down Heaven to invade earth… To those who have the audacity to ask God to stop the sun…I STAND WITH YOU. This world needs people like you.

The Wind

Lord, sweep me off my feet with Your wind, the wind of Your Spirit; The might rushing wind.  The Nooma.  The Ruach.  Rush into me in Pentecost fashion, setting this heart ablaze. I’ll wait in Jerusalem for that outpouring of Your Spirit and dunamis power.  Then I’ll know I’m ready to make Your name known.

And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now" (Acts 1:4-6 NKJV).

The beauty of Your wind is that I can’t see it…I see its effects though.  May I not chase Your wind, to grasp it with my own might…but I stand here, that Your wind may sweep me off my feet.  I’ll fly.  Oh yes! I shall fly.  I’m gonna soar with You.  And, soar as high as the heavens.  I’ll fly with You.  In the heights of heaven, I’ll be seated with Christ in hevenly places.  As I fly.  As I soar.  The thing is, my feet are still touching the earth, but my spirit rises with You.

The Ressurrection

Your dreams may have flatlined.  The authorities have put them in a bodybag, ready to card them away to the morgue.  The pathologist has been called to examine why your dreams have died, like if you need to be reminded of the dreaded disappointments.  You know that all too well.

The memories don’t cease to haunt your every waking moment.  You’ve started to make funeral arrangements for your dreams, “the newly departed.” You’re in silence.  So quiet…you only hear your heartbeat with a rhythm of fear, as it borders arrhythmia.  “Lub dub, luubb dub, lub dub.”

One. Two. Three.  An impression is made.  All of a sudden, the atmosphere is changing.  Your head perks up…”What is going on?”  You pay no attention and continue minding your own business.
A man walks up to you.  He’s holding a treasure chest.  He hands you the treasure chest while saying, “I haven’t forgotten.  You are not forgotten.”

As fast at the Man showed up, you don’t see Him again.  You open the treasure chest, only to find all of your dreams ALIVE and invigorated.
"But those who wait on the LORD
      Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint
" (Isaiah 40:31)
Hold on to your dreams.  Don’t let go.  Don’t let go!!  God has invested too much into your life for you to give up.  It shall come to pass.  Every last promise shall come to pass and be fulfilled.  “He will perfect that which concerns you.”  There is too much greatness within you to give up.  This mountain climb’s gonna be worth it all.

That One Thing Pt. 1

I was recently at a Saturday evening gathering at a moderately-sized church in the greater Columbus, Ohio area.  Speaking, were two representatives from the International House of Prayer (IHOP) in Kansas City, Missouri. They spoke, at length, on a famous passage of scripture,

"ONE THING have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple" (Psalm 27:4).

I have rehearsed that chapter for the past decade or so.  Sure, it blessed me beyond measure and provided solace in times of trouble. Psalm 27, along with Psalms 23, 91, 121, 124...(you get the idea), was an important weapon in an arsenal against many-a-battles of life. As my walk with the Lord progressed, a common theme began to materialize: I am to pursue His heart, not His hand; the beauty of His face, not the things He could do for me.

An interesting two-fold paradox ensues.  [1] It is when I get lost in His presence, [only then] can I truly find myself.  Or, is it that when I get lost in His presence...that step of faith, that pursuit, allows Him to find me.  [2] It is when I become totally captivated by His gaze, [only then] can I truly see myself.

Allow me to paint a picture for you.  Imagine staring someone ever so intently into their eyes.  What do you see? Of course, you'll see some of the fine details of the eye, like the iris, lens, pupil, and conjunctiva (lol).  But, a more comprehensive look reveals the reflection of YOUR face. Your image in the reflection of His gaze is who you truly are.

A total shift of attention from yourself  to seeking the very person and presence of God is "where it's at."  This is when the ONE THING becomes the ONE AND ONLY THING.
